Leading the Way Toward a More Sustainable Future

with Director of Global Climate Strategy Kate Hanley

Kate Hanley is helping Aramark fight climate change, making steadfast commitments to sustainability that will positively impact our communities and environment.

Kate Hanley, Director of Global Climate Strategy

With over ten years of experience in the field of sustainability, Kate Hanley (she/her), Director of Global Climate Strategy, supports Aramark in its mission to make a positive impact on our communities and our planet. Along with the organization, Kate takes sustainability to heart in her goals to address climate change at an international level.

“At Aramark, our sustainability plan, Be Well. Do Well., focuses on making a positive impact on people and planet. My role focuses more on the planet side of things. We’re aiming to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and our carbon footprint as a company, specifically with a goal to reduce emissions in the U.S. 15% by 2025 from our 2019 baseline.”

Since joining Aramark, Kate has helped the organization set even more ambitious climate goals.

“What’s really exciting is that in November 2021, we committed to set enterprise-wide science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with climate science. We’ve been going through a process of setting new climate targets that have accelerated our efforts on climate. With science-based targets, Aramark will set new goals that are of the right speed and scale to address climate change.”

Kate originally became interested in sustainability in college, where she first learned about climate change and the impact it is having and will continue to have on the places and people we care about.

“As an economics major, I was really inspired to find this nexus of economics and the environment. I then went on to complete a dual degree program, receiving an MBA and a master’s in environmental science and policy, with the goal of working at the intersection of business and climate change.”

With prior experience in both the nonprofit and public sector as it relates to sustainability, Kate notes that part of the excitement of working in the field is how it constantly evolves to develop better answers for problems affecting the planet.

“It’s a field that changes quickly. Sustainability requires constant learning because best practices are always changing, and there are always new solutions. As companies and organizations move along their sustainability journey, the kinds of skills and tools that you need to influence others and drive chance are always developing.”

The constantly evolving field of sustainability has required Kate to develop a variety of competencies over the course of her career, from understanding the science itself to communicating findings to different stakeholders and motivating groups at large.

“At Aramark, one aspect of my work that I have genuinely enjoyed is getting to wear many different hats and work with various functional units, lines of business, and different colleagues.”

As Director of Global Climate Strategy at Aramark, Kate oversees the organization’s science-based targets and climate goals across international operations. She helps ensure that Aramark sets a coordinated climate strategy not only in the U.S. but in all the countries and regions in which Aramark operates.

“I focus on our big goals but also the roadmaps and initiatives that we’re working on to achieve these goals over the next several years and long-term.”

Businesses around the world have increased focus on environmental, social, and governance commitments, and Aramark’s Be Well. Do Well. plan marked a milestone in clarifying the company’s corporate sustainability strategy. Kate is motivated by seeing the work she has dedicated her career to finally coming to the global stage. Not only are Aramark’s climate goals and commitments helping the company do good things for the environment, but they’re also supporting the work Aramark’s partners and clients around the world are doing in order to slow the effects of climate change.

“We’ve crossed a threshold where sustainability has become a business imperative. That gives me a lot of hope that this won’t subside and will continue to be important to organizations. It’s exciting to me that the time has come, not just at Aramark but at all companies. It makes me very optimistic for those of us whose roles touch on sustainability. My day-to-day motivation comes from having a team of people at Aramark that I enjoy working with, can brainstorm and collaborate with, and make progress with to positively impact our world.”

Kate looks forward to helping Aramark meet its climate goals and continuing to develop strategies and solutions to address the most important problems affecting the environment, and she knows that the Aramark community is one that will support her in her journey.

“I live and breathe climate. I can talk about it all day, but when I hear colleagues talking about their work and how it contributes to our climate strategy, that feels so rewarding because it shows me that this work and our goals are embedded into the organization. Everyone is taking ownership of how their work contributes to making our planet a better place.”

Q + A

Hear more from our conversation with Kate in the Q&A section below.

  • What has been one of your favorite projects while working at Aramark?

One of the projects I’ve been really involved with is working on our commitment to set science-based targets and raise our ambition level to fight climate change. That has involved working with a lot of stakeholders to understand why we should do it, what it means, how we should move forward now that we’ve made that commitment, and how we should measure and track our progress towards our climate goals through our greenhouse gas inventory. I’ve been managing that project over the last couple of months by gathering data, crunching numbers, and figuring out Aramark’s carbon footprint so that we can track progress towards our goals.

  • What is your advice to someone looking to begin or transition to sustainability in their career?

My advice is to be open minded because there are a lot of ways to work in the sustainability space. I've worked in the nonprofit, public, and now private sector. Think about the impact you want to make and how hands-on you want to be. Do you want to be a generalist, focusing on a lot of topics? Or do you want to be a subject matter expert in one area of sustainability? There's a lot of different ways to go. If you’re just starting out, be open and follow your interests. If you're excited and passionate about something, dig in there. Be willing to give everything a try; a lot of sustainability is learning by doing. Dig in where you can and get started.

  • What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

In normal times, I would say traveling, but I obviously haven’t done too much of that in the last couple of years. I really love the beach. I live outside of Boston but go to Cape Cod very regularly because my husband is from there and all of my in-laws live there. I love being near the ocean; it brings me a lot of joy. Doesn’t matter if it’s winter or summer, I still love to go take a walk on the beach. My husband is a chef, so we also do a lot of eating out and trying new foods and restaurants. It’s kind of serendipitous that I found myself at Aramark, so rooted in hospitality and food since a lot of my personal life is rooted in hospitality and food.
