Community Partnerships & the Power of Positive Experiences

with Vice President of Community Partnerships Jami Leveen

Jami Leveen, Vice President of Community Partnerships, believes in the power of partnership and the ability to do more by doing good. For Jami, her role is about more than forming meaningful relationships between Aramark and other organizations; it’s about creating lasting impact.

Jami Leveen, Vice President of Community Partnerships

In her role as Vice President of Community Partnerships, Jami Leveen (she/her) fosters a culture of purpose at Aramark.

“I love my role because everything I do, every day, is about driving positive impact in the world. I get to spend time and energy working on projects, creating new initiatives, and handling day-to-day business, while also making sure we’re making an impact and a difference in the community.”

Jami began her career with Aramark over two decades ago in our Sports & Entertainment line of business. She explored various career areas during her time there, from marketing and communications to sales and business development. Throughout her career, Jami worked in catering, premium services, and large-scale events fostering her love for hospitality and service. While she found the business exciting, Jami became more and more curious about how sustainability could help drive the business forward and create a better world.

“In the early 2000s, we started to see a growing demand from meeting planners for green meetings and events. They were asking us — How do we reduce water usage? How do we not use so many cut flowers? How do we reduce food waste and handle portions? In response, I became really involved in driving sustainable solutions. As my role evolved out of convention centers across the broader S&E portfolio, I started to get involved with the Green Sports Alliance, and I loved it. I wanted to do that full time.”

Motivated by the desire to drive greater impact in the world, Jami transitioned out of her role within Sports & Entertainment when the role for Director of Community Relations opened at Aramark’s headquarters.

“While my background had been in environmental sustainability, the job was appealing because it spoke to how we help people and build our local communities.”

As her passion for community involvement flourished, so did her role – expanding to include corporate contributions, employee volunteerism, and strategic partnerships that furthered Aramark’s mission to do great things for employees, partners, communities, and the planet.

“The thing that I love is that every day, I’m able to do something – even if it’s not me personally donating a gift or making the contribution – by creating the framework through which all of this can happen. It enables employees everywhere to give back to the communities that they care about.”

Jami breaks down her role within Community Partnerships and the strategy overall into three components: Care. Give. Do. The organization and its employees focus on issues they care about, give time, money, and donations to support solutions, and engage in volunteer activities that drive change in their communities. Jami is proud to be a part of the team that leads Aramark’s broader Be Well. Do Well. strategy to create positive impact for the people and the planet.

“Community Partnerships is an inspiring space to be in. I wish I didn’t have to address the underlying issues – unequal access to education, food insecurity, health inequities, wealth disparity, and beyond, – but they exist, so I’m glad we are making an effort to help. To be in a role for a company like Aramark, where I can actually help direct the strategy to solve those issues, is really wonderful because we are genuinely making a difference.”

In reminiscing on a few of her favorite and most rewarding projects of her career, Jami commented on the impact that has been generated from Aramark’s collaboration with the American Heart Association on Healthy for Life, an innovative nutrition education curriculum. Together, they spent years creating nutrition and cooking education experiences designed to help families in underserved communities learn how to access, choose, and prepare the healthy food they need.

“We spent a lot of time developing the content, refining it, performing evaluations, and getting it to a point where we felt like it was really strong and unique enough to differentiate it from other similar programming. Since we’ve released it, it’s been used by over 800 nonprofit organizations across the country. We put a lot of heart and soul into building something powerful, so much so that we’re continuing to invest in it today.”

Jami continues to foster partnerships where employees and customers can see meaningful change happening in their local communities. She and her team also work to coordinate numerous volunteer opportunities for employees each year, including Aramark Building Community Day – Aramark’s global day of community service.

“I come from a background of hospitality, so at a very practical level, I believe in the power of positive experiences and moments that matter.”

Moments that matter drive Aramark’s business forward, and leaders like Jami further the organization’s meaningful impact, creating better communities for tomorrow.

  • How do you stay motivated in your role?

I've been with Aramark for 22 years, so I really care about the reputation of the organization. There is a little piece of me that feels like since I like this company, I want other people to like this company too. I want to feel proud about the work that I do, and I want people to understand that Aramark really does care. There's the motivation around the personal satisfaction I get in the day-to-day, knowing that we're enabling individuals but also knowing that the work that I do is meaningful to the organization at large. I also get to help people have a better life in some way, even if it was just a better day. Whether it’s creating a volunteer opportunity or providing a much-needed meal or access to training, I know we have the power to make a difference. People want to come work for us because they know that community involvement is something we care about. If I can play a role in that at any level, I think is motivating.

  • How has Aramark supported your growth and leadership within the organization?

I had the opportunity early in my career to participate in a number of leadership development programs. One in particular was the most rewarding thing I think Aramark had done for me as an employee. The program was an immersive ten-week training program with a small group of other developing leaders. We had the opportunity to participate in developmental training, and then were assigned a personal coach for eight weeks. It was incredible because it felt like an investment in me as an employee, personally and professionally. My other favorite development opportunity was a week of culinary training at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa. That was amazing.

  • Does a specific mentor stand out to you from your career?

Carl Mittleman, who was president of Sports & Entertainment at the time, was great. I didn’t report to him, but he was always open to my suggestions and encouraged me to pursue what I wanted to do in sustainability. He was supportive, and when I went to him and said that I wanted to move into community relations, his response was, “What can I do to help?” To me, that’s not only a sign of a good manager, but a good leader. He recognized I wanted to make a change and helped me get there. I’m grateful for the opportunities he allowed me to pursue.
