Behind the Music: Aramark InTune

with Tamsin Fast, Greg Lennox, & Alyx Reinhardt

World Day of Music celebrates the beauty of music in all its forms and the impact it has had on the world. Aramark InTune is an employee-run group at Aramark that keeps the music alive, all year long.

InTune members spreading joy through music to the Aramark community

From Employee Resource Groups to the Aramark Run Club, Aramark offers a variety of avenues for employees to come together and share their talents. Comprised of singers and musicians who call Aramark home, Aramark InTune allows employees who share a passion for music to spread joy through song.

Chief Compliance Officer Tamsin Fast (she/her) founded Aramark InTune at our Philadelphia headquarters in 2019. Her passion for music prompted her to see if any of her coworkers were interested in forming a group.

“I play the violin and enjoy making music with others, and I thought it would be fun to see if others at Aramark might want to make music too,” Fast says. “At the office, we put a sign on the monitors inviting people to come to a meeting, and nearly 30 people showed up – about 2/3 singers and 1/3 instrumentalists. We realized we had found something special.”

While not a founding member, Greg Lennox (he/she/they), Senior Director, Corporate Communications, joined early in the group’s history.

“I joined InTune because it was an opportunity to take something that I’ve always enjoyed in my personal life and make it part of my professional life as well,” Lennox notes. “I think work-life balance isn’t just about splitting time between your two parallel worlds; it’s about finding ways to bring your entire self – your identity, your talents, your creativity, your enthusiasm – to work.”

InTune in Motion

InTune’s first performance was a rendition of the national anthem at Aramark’s headquarters for Veteran’s Day. With more members and even more charming voices, the group went on to perform Winter Wonderland at the December 2019 employee town hall, followed by caroling throughout the building.

Three months later when COVID-19 prompted the closure of our headquarters, InTune members didn’t let the obstacle of being unable to meet in person stop them from spreading joy through music. Through virtual collaboration, they recorded “Lean on Me,” letting their friends and colleagues know that they were there for each other during a global pandemic. Along with others, Fast and Lennox discovered that InTune could rehearse, prepare, and send videos virtually, allowing the group to expand internationally.

“At the time, we had no idea that this would be the first of over a dozen (and counting) virtual choir performances we’d create,” Lennox says. “It turned out that going virtual, for rehearsals and performances, would enable the group to evolve from a Philadelphia club to a nationwide and even, occasionally, an international group of collaborators, which was quite a remarkable silver lining on the pandemic cloud.”

InTune in Action

Aramark employees aim to live out the organization’s vision – to be the most admired employer and trusted hospitality partner – in everything they do.

“Aramark InTune embodies our culture of hospitality,” Fast says. “We’re always thinking about our audience and want to do great things for them.”

Lennox agrees, noting that InTune not only embodies the company’s identity but also has the same goals as the organization.

“Part of Aramark’s vision is to be the most admired employer, and one of the admirable things about this company as a workplace is the importance that is placed on valuing employees as people – complete, authentic, well-rounded people,” Lennox remarks. “One of our goals as a company is to ‘Embody Our Hospitality culture,’ recognizing that ‘Our People Make the Difference,’ and I genuinely believe that sentiment is evident in every song that InTune has chosen to perform, When it comes to our values, not only have half our projects been explicitly related to respecting and appreciating differences, but I don’t think it’s possible to deny that our singers and musicians – like the company at large – are passionate about everything we do.”

InTune members have used their talents to aid in celebrations of heritage and identity across the company while honoring the Aramark culture.

“Aramark InTune has performed in support of several ERG events,” IT Senior Technical Analyst Alyx Reinhardt (she/her) adds. “Currently we are working on a special song for the Pride ERG to celebrate Pride month, which is set to debut during the Aramark Pride Summit.”

Even if you haven’t sung or played in a while, InTune welcomes all employees who have an appreciation for music.

“I love being with others who enjoy music as much as I do because I can really be myself,” Fast says. “I feel a real sense of belonging and love seeing the effect our music has on others. Music is the universal language and has the capacity to bring joy to everyone.”

“How wonderful it is to do what you love while in the job that you love,” Reinhardt adds.

Q + A

Hear more from our conversations about Aramark InTune in the Q&A section below.

  • Why did you join InTune?

I’m a singer and absolutely love the opportunity to collaborate with other singers and musicians, both in person and virtually, to support our fellow employees and business units. – Alyx Reinhardt

  • Why do you enjoy being part of InTune?

I’ve always enjoyed singing, and I treasure the time with others who have similar interests, but most of all, I cherish the sense that we can help brighten people’s days and celebrate shared causes through music. – Greg Lennox

  • What is your favorite memory from your time with the group?

I’ve been really proud of several of our projects, but a particular favorite of mine was our holiday song in December of 2020. We were approaching the end of our first year defined by COVID-19, and it felt important to recognize the company’s response to the crisis while still acknowledging the hardships and challenges we’d collectively been facing. Writing and performing an extremely Aramark-specific rendition of My Favorite Things (which we called “My NEW Favorite Things”) was a way to encapsulate that mixture of sadness and optimism that so many of us were feeling that holiday season. – Greg Lennox
