Inspiring the Next Generation: See How Junior Culinary Stars Shine

with Aramark Student Nutrition

Culinary creativity sizzled as middle and elementary school students at two school districts in Texas put on their chefs’ hats and sharpened their cooking skills to show off their best dishes in annual recipe competitions.

Culinary creativity sizzled as middle and elementary school students at two school districts in Texas put on their chefs’ hats and sharpened their cooking skills to show off their best dishes in annual recipe competitions.

The contests at Texas’ Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District (CISD), east of Houston, and Pflugerville Independent School District (ISD), north of Austin, have become so popular over the years that Aramark Student Nutrition created a formal program inspired by them – Junior Culinary Star.

Jill G., Marketing Director – South Region with Student Nutrition, believes programs like this are key to inspiring, engaging, and teaching students about nutrition and future career paths.

“The recipe contests are a fun way to engage students who are interested in culinary science. The students learn about food ingredients, cooking techniques, and developing recipes, while also learning that healthy eating is an essential step to a healthier life.”

The Aramark Junior Culinary Star program allows chefs and food service directors across the U.S. to join in on the fun and start their own student recipe contests. Keep reading to learn about this year’s contests in Texas!

Fresh and Healthy at Goose Creek

Fourth and fifth grade students across Goose Creek CISD wrapped this year’s recipe contest when winners presented their dishes at a school board meeting in early February. In all, 15 students submitted winning recipes that included Texas farm fresh produce.

Each student winner was recognized at their school, received customized chef jackets, and won aeroponic gardens to grow their own vegetables and herbs at home.

Roshelle S., Assistant Food Service Director at Goose Creek CISD with Student Nutrition, touched on how the annual contest ties back to the school’s mission to ‘Develop the Whole Child.’

“This contest reinforces the message that food can be good and healthy…It allows us to tap into Goose Greek’s mission by taking what [students] eat in the cafeteria a step further by challenging them to put into action what they hear at school.”

Firing up Future Chefs at Pflugerville

Forty two middle and elementary students submitted recipes and photos this year in Pflugerville ISD’s Chef Stephanie’s Junior Chef Contest, named after Student Nutrition Chef Stephanie G.

This month, Chef Stephanie and the Student Nutrition team selected one winner from each of the 12 participant schools, further narrowing the field to four finalists. Later this month, the finalists’ dishes will be judged by district, city, and community members to announce a winner. William H., Resident District Manager at Pflugerville ISD with Student Nutrition, reflected on what this long-standing competition and its meaning to the community.

“We started this recipe contest 10 years ago. It’s a way to show that [Aramark is] more than just a food service provider; it shows our engagement in the community and encourages culinary innovation and young chefs. It also ties into our partnership with the district’s Career and Technical Education Culinary Arts Program.”

In fact, the first winner of Chef Stephanie’s Junior Chef Contest, Caroline Coleman, went on to compete and win on the TV culinary competition, “Chopped Junior.”

Coleman, who later went on to attend classes at the Culinary Institute of America, credits the Pflugerville contest as a way to get young chefs inspired.

“Pflugerville and Aramark’s Junior Chef Contest is an incredible springboard for future chefs in Pflugerville.”

Even community members look forward to the annual contest, Pflugerville ISD Board Member Vernagene Mott said.

“The Junior Chef competition has become a much-anticipated event in Pflugerville each year. It’s always exciting to seek out talented young chefs and their creations.”
