Job Description

Aramark’s Legal Department seeks an attorney to serve as Assistant General Counsel - Employment Law. This person will be a key member of the Employment Law and Litigation Team, which provides comprehensive legal support for U.S. employment-related and litigation matters across all of Aramark’s lines of business.  This position will focus on a core set of employment law responsibilities and provide legal support in those designated areas across all of Aramark’s operations within the United States.  This functional responsibility will include the handling of litigation, government investigations and administrative proceedings, the monitoring of certain areas of employment law and regulation, the development of policies and procedures to enable compliance with employment laws and regulations, the advising and counseling of the business on federal, state and local employment law matters including, but not limited to, those involving the ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FCRA, FLSA, OFCCP, prevailing wage, Title VII, and USERRA.  The position will be based at Aramark’s corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, PA and will report to the Senior Vice President & Deputy General Counsel – Employment, Litigation, Government Affairs, and Supply Chain/GPO.

The Assistant General Counsel – Employment Law will:

  • Provide sound counsel, legal advice and strategic support on a number of federal, state and local employment law matters which may include the ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FCRA, FLSA, OFCCP, prevailing wage, Title VII, WARN, and USERRA.
  • Identify, assess, and partner in solving legal risks and opportunities within the employment law area.
  • Handle/oversee litigation, administrative claims and attorney demand letters from employees including, but not limited to, those involving employment practices liability claims and wage and hour claims.
  • Handle inquiries and investigations by federal, state and/or local agencies such as the EEOC, OFCCP, DOL, etc.
  • Assess brand and reputational risks associated with employment law matters and provide advice and counsel about the potential impact of those risks.
  • Provide legal support for immigration matters.
  • Enable growth by preparing, reviewing and/or negotiating various legal documents including, but not limited to, solicitations, contracts, agreements, policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a business partner and provide advice and counsel to Human Resources staff and management on a variety of employment law issues.
  • Partner with functions and COEs, including Compliance, to enable organizational compliance with key employment laws, rules and regulations applicable to Aramark’s operations.
  • Conduct legal research and analyze employment law issues which impact the business.
  • Stay abreast of new and changing employment laws, human resource practices and trends.  
  • Establish best practices across the employment law function.
  • Develop and provide training on employment laws and regulations and human resource practices.
  • Manage outside counsel.

 

The preferred candidate will have all or most of the following attributes and experience:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong analytical ability, strong initiative, and both interpersonal skills and client-service skills consistent with the highest professional standards

  • A seasoned and effective lawyer. Demonstrates a high degree of client acceptability, with a high level of confidence exhibited in client interactions. Possesses excellent client-service skills and an ability to interact with and effectively advise senior business leaders, such as COOs, Presidents, CFOs, heads of Human Resources, and the Chief Compliance Officer. Demonstrates the ability to establish credibility at senior organizational levels and win respect from all organizational levels. In key client interactions, presents ideas logically, assertively and effectively. Facilitates consensus and uses it effectively to resolve conflict and overcome resistance.

  • Strong and effective judgment. Thinks logically and exercises well-developed and independent judgment to produce creative and constructive solutions under pressure. Demonstrates experienced and seasoned strategic and analytic approach to solving clients’ legal needs. Demonstrates professional and personal ethics and integrity.

  • High-level problem solver. Handles and brings complex and sophisticated legal matters to a successful conclusion with minimal supervision. Can resolve, or lead the resolution of, critical legal issues faced by the Company with minimal supervision.

  • High level of industry. Shows a strong work ethic and a high level of productivity and efficiency.

  • Solid leader. Demonstrates effective leadership skills and instincts and executive presence. Leads projects in collaboration with colleagues to accomplish prioritized goals.

  • Strong communicator and collaborator. Communicates and collaborates effectively and skillfully with colleagues and clients, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications

  • A J.D. with excellent academic credentials.

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a top law firm and/or sophisticated corporate legal department handling labor and employment law matters before federal, state and local courts and administrative agencies and counseling clients on labor and employment law matters.

  • Current Pennsylvania bar admission or admission in another jurisdiction with the ability and interest in becoming licensed to practice in Pennsylvania.
