POSITION SUMMARY: Describe the general purpose of the job or why the job exists.


The Trip Leader (TL) for Wilderness River Adventures serves as the on-river manager and as the primary assistant to the River Operations Manager. The TL establishes and maintains the professional level of river guiding within which WRA operates in the Grand Canyon or Canyon Lands National Parks. The TL must always place the safety of the passengers and crew first and also serve as an advocate to improve any aspect of our on river procedures which might me deficient, might endanger the crew, passengers or reputation and overall safety record of WRA. The trip leader must meet and maintain all guide qualifications as required by the NPS.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: List the principle on-going responsibilities that are necessary to accomplish the purpose of the job.


  • Conduct on-river guide’s training at beginning of season and as needed in season. Assist in documentation of guide’s training certification.
  • Oversee pre-trip and post trip warehouse maintenance of river equipment.
  • Assist in all Interpretation programs relating to the natural and human history material of the Colorado River and Canyon Lands National Parks. Work in concert with the interpretive programs manager
  • Conduct in-season assessment of guides in order to devise exercises to assist in the instruction of guides to improve their boat handling skills. Assist in end-of-season guides evaluations.
  • Trip Leaders should observe the WRA operation and assist in implementing policies as they relate to the safe and professional WRA program.
  • Maintain a positive attitude – always be willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed.
  • Trip Leaders must be able to work in highly stressful situations and be able to make the correct decisions when needed.
  • Trip Leaders will ensure guide compliance with WRA’s operations Manual and the NPS Commercial Operating Requirements (CORs).
  • Trip Leaders must monitor the condition of all equipment and supplies. Assist River Operations manager in maintaining safe, professionally equipped boats and ample quantities of repair supplies.
  • Trip Leaders must be able to conduct on river repairs and ensure that equipment will make it safely back to the shop.
  • Trip Leaders may be required to submit periodical summaries of operations as requested by management. Then be prepared to review.
  • Be aware of MSDS sheets and books and read and use this information when necessary
  • Must be honest, dependable and forthright, with the ability to confidently work without direct supervision
  • Go the extra mile and follow through to ensure guest satisfaction
  • Diplomatically handle guest complaints – always be polite and maintain a professional manner
  • Supervise the pre-trip loading of rafts. Ensure the following safety items are loaded: rescue kit, major and minor first aid (check for expiration dates and product integrity), repair kits, satellite phone, spare bow lines, spare motors (and/or oars), and air pump. Ensure boat registration is current and visible.
  • TL should test the communications equipment at the warehouse for operation. Deficiencies should be reported to management.
  • TL should conduct passenger orientation and “Rules of the River.”
  • The TL is responsible for all decisions while on the river, including, but not limited to: safe navigation of the river itself, passenger and crew safety, orientations and interpretation, camp site location and setup, meal preparation and proper food handling procedures, hikes, trip flow (daily mileage, passenger last day of trip logistics’, adherence to NPS (CORs’ and Mission Statement), company policy, emergency management, on-river equipment repair, first aid, all communication between the guest, crew and company, and training.
  • The Trip Leader is also responsible for a safe and timely run out and assisting the truck driver in the safe and proper loading of the rafts during the takeout.
  • Must be able to work with diverse populations in a supportive and positive manner
  • Must be flexible - willing to work a varied schedule
  • Other duties as assigned


STATUS AND SCOPE: Describe the reporting relationships, special skills and abilities required to perform essential job functions.

  • Trip Leaders report to The River Operations Manager
  • Trip Leaders need to be comfortable working outdoors as they may encounter desert animals, which includes but is not limited to: mice, jack rabbits, snakes, bats etc…
  • Trip Leaders must be comfortable working long days in extreme weather conditions.
  • Trip Leaders must be comfortable working with guests and crew in a wilderness setting. The TL is the responsible party and must be able to handle many different types of situations. Sometimes life threatening.


QUALIFICATIONS:  Describe experience, education and related course work typically required or expected to perform essential job functions.

  • Must meet all NPS regulations required for Trip Leader status. Number of trips, current Health and CPR cards plus a current food handlers card.
  • Strong English communication skills are required
  • Must be over 18 years of age
  • Trip Leaders must be willing to participate in the random drug/alcohol testing pool.
