Position Summary: The WRA hiking guide will be required to ensure that guests complete their hike into or out of Grand Canyon with hikes starting at Bright Angel Lodge at the South Rim. The hiking guide must ensure that passenger can complete the hike with a minimum of difficulty and maximum of enjoyment and safety
Essential Functions:

  • Have the physical ability to perform long elevation change hikes in extreme weather conditions. Hiking guide must carry extra food and water as an emergency backup, as well as first aid kit and reliable means of communication with them.
  • The hiking guide must provide an orientation to clients about basic hiking etiquette when passing other hikers or mules, area regulations, safety procedures, resource protection information, litter, human waste, personal safety and emergency procedures.
  • The hiking guide is to be a knowledgeable companion for clients who may be inexperienced or challenged by the hike, provide informed encouragement to the passengers, help them make good decisions about pace, hydration, and eating to ensure they can complete the hike.
  • Hiking guide will spend night before hike at South Rim  and return to Page after hiking out of canyon
  • Other duties as assigned

Status and Scope:

  • Hiking guide will report to the River Operations Manager
  • Hiking guide must be comfortable working long days in extreme weather conditions.
  • Hiking guide must be in excellent physical condition and have ability to hike 10 miles into and out of Grand Canyon




  • Must have current CPR and Wilderness First Responder certifications
  • Have equal or higher certifications
  • Have current drivers license
  • Strong English communication skills are required
  • Must be over 18 years of age

Travel Requirements:   More than 30%
Lifting Requirements:  
MEDIUM - Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
