Position Summary: The Boat Captain, pilots a tour boat transporting guests on various tours on the lake.  The Boat Captain is Coast Guard certified and extremely safety conscious. Boat Captains should also be highly knowledgeable about Lake Crescent, the Olympic Peninsula and the surrounding areas and their history; acting as a useful resource for all guests – providing commentary and answering guest questions.
Essential Functions:

  • Complete US Department of Transportation/Coast Guard Pre and Post Trip Inspections
  • Pilot tour boats on trips typically ranging from 1 and a half hours to 3 hours in length
  • May be required to run special cruises – such as breakfast and lunch cruises for tour groups
  • Assist Operations Manager and other relevant parties with Tour Groups – ensuring all pre-arrival preparations have been completed. Go above & beyond to ensure Tour Groups and all guests enjoy their boat tours / meal cruises
  • Boat Captains are responsible for ensuring the safety of the vessel, passengers and crew
  • Ensure coast guard regulations are followed at all times
  • Boat Captains should be customer service focused - able to entertain and provide informative, historical, interactive and factually correct commentary, helping to create guest memories that could potentially last a lifetime
  • Boat Captains should be highly knowledgeable about Lake Crescent and the surrounding areas and their histories. They should be able to provide commentary to guests on the boat tours. This knowledge should extend beyond the commentary enabling them to provide accurate answers to a variety of guest questions and inquiries. They should also be dedicated to continually extending and updating their knowledge and improving their presentation techniques
  • Respond directly to all customer complaints and ensure they are resolved efficiently and immediately in a professional manner which does not negatively impact on the reputation of Lake Crescent Lodge
  • May be required to work directly with the US Coast Guard on inspections, work plans and other areas of the marine field
  • May be required to fuel and pump boats
  • Must be prepared to work a varied schedule according to business needs - which includes weekends
  • Identify maintenance and safety issues and take the correct steps to correct them
  • Must be honest, dependable and forthright, with the ability to confidently work without direct supervision
  • Report to work in proper uniform
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Know and comply with all company policies and procedures regarding safety, security, emergencies and energy
  • Report to work on time and in complete uniform
  • Other duties as assigned

Status and Scope:

  • The Boat Captain reports to the Operations Manager
  • Must be committed to providing safe boat operations – Boat Captains are responsible for the safety of  the boat, passengers and crew
  • Cannot be prone to motion sickness or sea sickness as Boat Captains spend hours at a time piloting boats on the water
  • The Boat Captain should be willing to gain a good understanding of Lake Crescent and surrounding area, becoming fully knowledgeable on the area’s history, activities and amenities
  • Position requires a strong customer service focus, strong communication skills and a positive attitude.

  • Must be fluent in the English language in speaking, reading and writing Must have a High School Diploma or GED Must be proficient in boat maintenance and navigation Must be able to demonstrate navigation of Lake Powell
  • Must have a valid US Driver's License and pass a Motor Vehicle Record history check
  • Must posess 50 ton Coast Guard license or higher and CPR and First Aid certified
Equipment Used:

Pontoon boat, 2 Way Radio, Boat Navigation System, PA System, Fuel Dock Transfer Pumps, Anchors, Other
Travel Requirements:  
  • Little or no travel required (less than 10%) 
Lifting Requirements:  
  • MEDIUM - Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
