The job of Utility Laborer is for the purpose of providing maintenance/repair services as needed and/or assigned; assisting in a wide variety of maintenance and repair activities; addressing immediate operational and/or safety concerns; and assisting skilled trades.  The Utility Laborer will

be in the Operations and Maintenance Department and will report to the Maintenance Manager.



  • Performs a wide variety of general maintenance/repair activities (i.e. carpentry, painting, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, minor masonry, etc.).
  • Assists skilled maintenance workers in accomplishing work (i.e. securing and transporting materials, completing specific assigned tasks, etc.).
  • Installs system component parts, equipment, and facility components such as lighting, walls, ceilings, heating and ventilating, alarms, plumbing, electrical, etc. not requiring a certified technician.
  • Repairs building system and components such as lighting, heating, walls, ceilings, ventilation, alarms, plumbing, electrical, etc. not requiring a certified technician.
  • Coordinates with skilled tradesmen and assigned supervisors for efficient completion of work orders.
  • Cleans buildings, maintains grounds, and performs snow removal as needed and/or assigned.
  • Arranges furniture and equipment for special events as needed and/or assigned.
  • Documents activities and status of maintenance/repairs and work completion.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Participates in meetings, training, and workshops as necessary to perform functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the completion of work and the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.




Skills required to perform multiple tasks and the capability to meet changing job conditions.  Skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job to include: operating equipment used in skilled trades, power and hand tools, etc. for which they have been trained as necessary; adhering to safety practices; handling materials of various types; able to follow both written and verbal instructions; capable of being trained and using mobile IPad and/or IPhone technology for work documentation; interpersonal skills with clients and co-workers; able to perform duties with minimal supervision; able to lift 50 lbs. above the waist for short distances including stairs; able to stand, kneel, climb ladders, scaffolds, and use lifts for which they receive training in normal course of duties; able to work in all types of weather conditions.



Salary Information


Starting salary is $22.09 per hour during a 90-day probationary period. Following successful completion of probationary period, salary will increase to $22.42 per hour. Normal work hours are 730am – 4pm.  Schedule will change to meet college work requirements. Union membership is required for this position.
