Perform General Responsibilities

  1. Prepares patient menus according to diet and department guidelines.
  1. Ensures patients receive appropriate meal trays according to their oral and fluid status.
  2. Records patient personal and cultural preferences, and pertinent information in Mealtracker. 
  3. Corrects and updates patient menus as required by diet changes.  Follows through with diet changes, utilizing Mealtracker.   Mark special menus as directed, utilizes meal patterns according to the diet order.
  4. Deliver and retrieve patient menus appropriately following departmental procedures.  Assist patient and/or family member with making selections as needed.  The Nutrition Assistant must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care within the scope of this job designated appropriate to the age groups of patients served: adults and geriatric adults as described in the Food & Nutrition Services policies and procedures manual.
  5. Supports patient’s use of feeding aids, as prescribed by Occupational Therapist.
  6. Maintain documentation regarding patients food preferences, supplements, and other as requested.
  7. Communicates diet information in an accurate and timely manner to dietitians and other staff.  Utilizes the telephone and pager system.
  8. Utilizes tray identification system and basic nutrition knowledge as they relate to patient menus and patients selection of menus.  Tallies menu items appropriately on production sheets.
  9. Transports food and other supplies to unit to meet patient requests/needs as needed.
  10. Addresses all patients’ Food & Nutrition Services related complaints in a timely manner.
  11. Participate in quality and research audits and other data collection, under the direction of the dietitian.
  12. Protect patient confidentiality.
  13. Participate in customer service training programs
  14. Participate in audits of patient menu / meal satisfaction.
  15. Cleans and sanitizes personal work area.


Maintains a positive service attitude at all times.  Maintains departmental patient satisfaction scores of 90% or above in each category: taste, hot, cold, accuracy, courtesy, overall satisfaction

  1. Reports to work punctually and maintains satisfactory attendance record according to department policy, clocks in and out for scheduled shift and lunch break.
  2. Makes organized use of time; obtains approval for overtime; adheres to requested deadlines.
  3. Complies with Hospital and Departmental policies regarding appearance and conduct. 
  4. Complies with hospital policy regarding confidentiality by maintaining an environment that supports the dignity and privacy of the patient and their families and visitors.
  5. Reports faulty damaged or lost equipment or property to appropriate person.

B. Facilitates a Positive Work Environment

  1. Assists in orientation of new personnel as assigned.
  2. Attends meetings to share concerns and offer suggestions.
  3. Receptive to changes in work schedule to accommodate the needs of the department.
  4. Follows through with responsibilities and resolves problems within scope of ability; communicates unresolved problems to department manager.
  5. Promotes a quiet and safe working environment.
  6. Excercises good judgement when handling customer/patient complaints and seek further assistance from supervisor/s as needed.
  7. Displays patience while working.




A. Completes required orientation for new procedures and skills.
B. Attends 100% of designated mandatory meetings, in services and hospital competency testing.

A. High School graduate or equivalent. 
B. Ability to read and write in English, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
C. Physical strength for such activities as moving equipment, lifting, etc. to a maximum of 40 lbs.
D. Good organizational skills and ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
E. Ability to work under sometimes stressful conditions which may occur in heavy workload.
F. Ability to work independently of constant supervision.
G. Good communication skills with ability to interact with different personalities.




A. Daily workload requires physical capability for lifting, pulling or pushing up to a maximum of 40 lbs.
B. Acute health care setting which serves all types of adult, & geriatric patients who present a variety of physical conditions and behaviors which may be unpredictable.  Patient contact may expose an individual to infections organisms or aggressive behaviors.  Adherence to universal precautions and safety protocols decreases or eliminates potential for harm.
C. Must be able to cope with moderate temperature fluctuations and a humid environment.
D. Food Service requires the use of chemicals for the purpose of sanitation and safe food handling practices therefore there is a danger of exposure which is minimized through the use of safety procedures/universal precautions/protective apparel.
E. Job requires repetitive motions and standing/walking.
