Description:

Position Summary: This position offers the guests who visit Mesa Verde National Park & Forest an opportunity to experience the surroundings of the area in a more intimate manner by going on a guided walk, lake, or coach tour. The guide will act as a personal interpreter on ONP cultural, historical, and natural resources while providing support to guests eager to experience the outdoor environment. In providing education and experiential opportunities, the guests’ visit will be enhanced and they will depart our property with a positive “Sense of Place” which will cause them to want to return.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: 

 

  • Guides will be responsible for educating themselves on the local ecology, geology, history and culture so that they are well-prepared to provide information and answer questions about the Park t. (Books are provided and Internet access)
  • Greet guests, brief them on plans for the activity, present them with (or collect from them) the Acknowledgement of Risk form (for Coach Tour only)
  • Guides must be capable of safely operating a 15 passenger van on local roads and highways and will be trained in the proper procedures for filling out required DOT paperwork.
  • Utilize radio for appropriate internal communications
  • Guides will sweep out tour coach after every tour, wash exterior as needed (which is usually as often), wash fingerprints off windows, and periodically the interior will need extra cleaning due to the buildup of dust during the dry summer months
  • Learn and maintain a knowledge about emergency procedures to ensure guest and employee safety
  • Give a detailed safety briefing and assess each guest on their ability to participate in the activity
  • Guides may be scheduled for shifts on the Activities Desk in the lobby or “roving interpretation” when not doing tours, providing information to guests and promoting tours.
  • Employee is responsible for general knowledge of corporate environmental policies and procedures and how they relate to their job functions.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Will be required to work a flexible and rotational schedule, including possible overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays.  Schedule may involve working a split shift.

Nonessential Functions: 

  • Other duties as assigned
  • May be responsible for cleaning projects assigned by management.
  • Employee is responsible for knowing the environmental aspects and associated impacts of position. .
  • Environmental objectives and targets may be communicated by managers for each department

 



Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. 
  • Two years’ experience in like employment
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and handle stressful situations
  • Passion and knowledge regarding interpretive programs and the National Park System
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.  Must have a valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Associates Degree in Hospitality, Business or related field
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder preferred
  • Previous experience as an interpreter with demonstrated knowledge and practice of having met National Park Service guidelines with respect to interpretive standards
  • Proven ability as an interpretive guide/interpretive planner and program development
